William (Bill) Julius Ulbrich

MEADVILLE — William (Bill) Julius Ulbrich, 85, of Meadville, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at the Erie Veterans Administration Medical Center.

William was born on March 15, 1927, at Port Jervis, N.Y., the son of the late Julius Ulbrich and Ellen Colwell. He married Marian Catherine Hough on Aug, 19, 1948. She preceded him in death on Feb. 2, 2011.

He was a crane operator with the Operator Engineers Local 66, Erie. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II. He served on a sub tender ship in the Pacific Ocean and later during the war served on an Admiral Staff and was later honorably discharged from the Navy.

He was a member of Watson Run Church of God and then a member of Cornerstone Church of God. He was a member of the American Legion Post 111, having served as the chaplain from 2005-12 and was a long-term member of the Meadville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006, Meadville. He worked for 16 years assisting the Central Blood Bank as head of its blood drives in an effort to increase the blood collection and was very successful even selling poppies in exchange for donation funds. He was an avid woodcutter, and enjoyed his time tinkering in the garage. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting. The love and joy of his life was his time spent with his grandson, Kevin A. Jones. Bill was part of the team that created the Kinzua Dam built between 1960-65. This project created the Allegheny watershed spanning 2,180 square miles and ultimately provided a hydroelectric power plant.

Surviving are two daughters, Kelle Lyn Consla of Meadville and Karen Sue Ulbrich of Meadville; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Jones of Meadville; two grandchildren, Christopher P. Jones and his companion, Tasha Renee Neal, and Kevin A. Jones; two great-grandchildren, Conor Neal and Halie Neal; two sisters, Dorothy Grathwrohl and Jean Swingle, both of Port Jervis; and two brothers, Frankie Oppelt and Arthur Oppelt, both of Port Jervis.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Mark Douglas Ulbrich; two brothers, Alvin Ulbrich and Harold Ulbrich; and a sister, Alvina Seigel.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, at Dickson Funeral Home and Crematory, 130 N. Second St., Conneaut Lake.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Marshall Lillie, chaplain of Crawford County Hospice, officiating. A military honors funeral will be conducted by the American Legion Post 111 of Meadville at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Watson Run Cemetery.
