NEW BRIGHTON, Minn. —
Samuel P. Bates, 82, of New Brighton, Minn., formerly of North Oaks, Minn., passed away Friday, July 20, 2012.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Julie; his parents, Samuel and Cazzie of Meadville; and sister, Linda Chisholm of Arizona.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirlee Ruttger Bates; daughters, Becky Bates of New Brighton and Melanie Hjelm (Rick) of North Oaks; grandchildren, Lindsey and Samuel Hjelm and Emily Bates; also many loving relatives and friends.
Sam will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A U.S. Army veteran, he enlisted in August 1952 in Pittsburgh and was discharged in August 1954 in Ft. Eustis, Va.
Sam worked for 3M for 36 years, the last 16 years as director of public relations for 3M International. Sam traveled to more than 60 countries and six continents. Sam went to Minnesota from Pennsylvania to work for Hamline University as director of the News Bureau. He was an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America, a lifelong Mason and held many volunteer positions; Sam was involved with the formation of the Big Brothers of Greater St. Paul, Minn., Prayer Breakfast, Jobs In Transition, Junior Achievement, Union Gospel Mission, Restorative Justice, and Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, where he was a member.
Memorials are preferred to Westminster Church, Minnesota Historical Society or the Salvation Army.
Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. with gathering one hour prior at Holcomb-Henry-Boom-Purcell Funeral Home, 515 W. Highway 96 at Mackubin, Shoreview, Minn.
