Andrew Dennis

HARBORCREEK — Andrew Dennis, 87, of Harborcreek, passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his family.

He was born April 8, 1925, in Canonsburg, to the late Andrew Dennis Sr. (Denys) and Helen Lemish Dennis. He graduated summa cum laude from Cochranton High School.

Andrew served in the U.S. Merchant Marines after World War II and was formerly employed as a maintenance man at the Sarah A Reed Retirement Center, the Erie County Edmund L Thomas Adolescent Center and the paint department of the Boston Store.

He was a blue ribbon winner at the North East, Waterford and Wattsburg fairs for many years, and enjoyed farming and fishing.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Dennis, Mary Jane Dennis, Ruth Dennis and Dorothy Dennis Shook; brothers, Paul Dennis, Charles Dennis, Raymond Dennis and Frank Dennis; and son-in-law, Duane Hurlbert.

Andrew is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Ann Sowers Dennis; children, Deborah Lynette Hurlbert of Howard, Ohio, Wendell James and wife, Marya Woldering Dennis, of Bowie, Md., and David Lee and wife, Ruth Greto Dennis, of North East; grandchildren, the Rev. Philip and wife, Danita Sheffer Hurlbert, of North Royalton, Ohio, Justin and wife, Laura Brooks Hurlbert, of Sunbury, Ohio, and Allison Dennis of Bowie, Md.; great-grandchildren, Kalyn, Aubrey and Joel Hurlbert; sisters, Evelyn Dennis Graham of Hazelton and Anna Mae Miller of Meadville; brother, John and wife, Niclen Wertz Dennis, of Raleigh, N.C.; and sister-in-law, Donna Ervin Dennis of Cochranton.

Friends are invited to visit at Lamb of God Lutheran Church, 606 E. 38th St., Erie, on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon and attend the Celebration of Life service at noon. Pastor Bernard Bischoff of Lamb of God Lutheran Church and the Rev. Philip Hurlbert of State Road Community Church of the Nazarene, North Royalton, Ohio, will officiate.

Private interment will be at North East Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Lamb of God Lutheran Church, 606 E. 38th St., Erie, Pa. 16504; Community Nursing Services of North East Hospice, 7 Park St., North East, Pa. 16428; or Ketchum’s Korner, 23 Clinton St., North East, Pa. 16428.
