Joseph G. Piroch, M.D.

FOXBURG — Joseph G. Piroch, M.D., 76, of Foxburg, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012, after an extended hospitalization.

Born April 23, 1936, in Pittsburgh, he was a son of the late Joseph A. and Mary E. Piroch of Emlenton.

Valedictorian at Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School in 1954, Dr. Piroch subsequently was an honors graduate of St. Vincent College in Latrobe and then received his medical degree from University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Following a three-year internship, residency and senior residency in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic and a one-year fellowship in clinical cardiology at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals, he served for two years in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant commander and staff cardiologist at Pensacola (Fla.) Naval Hospital, part of the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute. Having received the National Defense Service Medal, he completed his tour of active duty in 1968 and relocated to Meadville, where he engaged in the private practice of cardiology and internal medicine for nearly 40 years. He was an associate fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, a director of the Northwest Pennsylvania Lung Association, a president of the Northwest Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Heart Association, a vice president of the Pennsylvania Heart Association and a director of cardiology at Meadville Medical Center.

Dr. Piroch was a devout Roman Catholic, as well as a member of the National Fellowship of Catholic Scholars. He was instrumental in the return of the Traditional Latin Mass to the Diocese of Erie, for which he served as a Latin Mass apostolate coordinator for more than 20 years. An eminent scholar in his own right, he authored myriad articles, monographs and letters on theology, classical and church music, American colonial and French-and-Indian War history, literature and poetry, and many other diverse topics. Renowned for his culinary skills, he was particularly fond of east-central European cuisine consistent with his Slovak heritage. An avid gardener, outdoor enthusiast, cat lover, classical tenor and violinist, and aficionado of the arts, his strongest devotion was always to God and family.

A dutiful and caring husband, father, grandfather and physician, he is survived and deeply missed by his wife of 46 years, Sigrid (nee Sample, daughter of Dr. James Sample, former director and conductor of the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra); a daughter, Deborah, of Birmingham, Ala.; a son, Joseph, and daughter-in-law, Christen, of Omaha, Neb.; a son, Gregory, and daughter-in-law, Jessica, of Baltimore, Md.; and seven grandchildren, Theresa, Joseph, Maura, Anastasia, Lauren, Andrew and Alana.

A traditional Latin High Requiem Mass will be celebrated by Father Ananias Buccicone, OSB, at Queen of Peace Church in Patton (Cambria County) at 11 a.m. Saturday. Rosary will begin at 10:45.

Interment at Emlenton Cemetery by Monsignor Jan Olowin will follow on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Flowers and Mass cards may be sent to PO Box 308, Harvey Road, Foxburg, Pa. 16036. Arrangements are under the direction of Hile Funeral Home Inc., Emlenton. Online condolences may be sent by visiting hilefh.com.
