Margaret Mary Saggio

Margaret Mary Saggio, 89, of 376 Arch St., Meadville, returned to her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, surrounded by her loving family at Wesbury United Methodist Community, Meadville.

Margaret was born in Nanticoke on Dec. 14, 1919, a daughter of the late Stephen and Anna Novak Marcinko. On Oct. 1, 1949, Margaret married Louis Joseph Saggio Sr.; he survives.

Margaret was a devoted member of St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, Meadville, and its Altar Rosary Society. She was a 60-year member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and was also a member of the First Catholic Slovak Union.

Margaret attended St. Joseph Parochial School in Nanticoke. In her earlier years, she had worked at the former Montgomery Wards and the former Talon Inc., both of Meadville. Margaret and her husband, Lou, owned a family catering business for many years and thoroughly enjoyed working and cooking their delicious meals together. Margaret was inducted into the “Sure-Jell Hall of Fame” in 1998. She was one of only 50 jam and jelly makers recognized from all regions of the United States for her lifetime achievement in jam and jelly making. She was very proud of this award. She used grapes and red raspberries that grew in their garden to make her tasty jellies. Margaret also enjoyed baking, especially her delicious Kolachis and cinnamon rolls, gardening, sewing, embroidering, reading, doing crossword puzzles, traveling with her husband and her son, Mark, the “vacation kid.” She especially enjoyed visiting churches and attending pilgrimages all over the country. She will be greatly missed and cherished by all who knew her. She was a beautiful “gift from God” who will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mom, grandma, sister and aunt who treasured every moment she had with her family.

In addition to her husband, Louis, of 60 years, the love of each other’s lives, Margaret is survived by a daughter, Rosalee Ann Rastetter and her husband, Stefan, of Erie; three sons, Anthony Stephen Saggio and his wife, Georgetta, of Allison Park, Louis Joseph Saggio Jr. and his wife, Beth, of Nashville, Tenn., and Mark Anthony Saggio of Erie; nine grandchildren who were dearly loved by “Nana,” Shane Krause of Erie, Nicholas Krause of Allison Park, Suzanne, Lauren and Eric Saggio of Pittsburgh, and Matthew, Joseph, Ashley and Michael Saggio of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Frank Marcinko and his wife, Rachel, of McKean; two sisters, Katherine Makowski of Nanticoke and Eleanor Bisczat of Lexington, Ky.; a brother-in-law, Walter Wysocki of Meadville; two sisters-in-law, Augie Saggio and Mildred Frisina, both of Meadville; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by a brother, Stephen Marcinko; two sisters, Mary Perez and Anna Wysocki; and five brothers-in-law, Mack Makowski, John Bisczat, Anthony Perez, Nicholas Saggio and Phillip Saggio.

Family and friends are invited to call on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, where a scripture service will be conducted.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, Meadville, at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Interment will take place in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Township.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Dr. Gertrude A. Barber Center, 136 East Ave., Erie, Pa. 16507; or Hospice of Crawford County, 464 Pine St., or Wesbury United Methodist Community, 31 N. Park Ave., both of Meadville, Pa. 16335.
