AUGUSTA, Ga. —
Raymond E. Davis, 85, of Augusta, Ga., born in Mosiertown, devoted husband of Joyce Beckwith Davis for 60 years, joined his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Doctor’s Hospital.
He accepted Jesus as his Savior at a very young age and followed the call of God into the ministry. He graduated from Baptist Bible Seminary in New York in 1950 and was ordained as a minister of the gospel. He graduated from Houghton College in 1954 with a degree in church music. He served as minister of music and youth at the following churches: First Baptist church of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Fleming Baptist Church, Southside Baptist Church and Open Door Baptist Church, Augusta.
He began Plantation Greenhouses, was an avid gardener and was passionate about all things related to horticulture. He was a certified rose judge by the American Rose Society. He retired as head of grounds at Gracewood State School & Hospital in 1997.
In addition to his wife, other survivors include their three children, Michael S. Davis, Beth Davis Josey (Wayne) and Kathleen Davis Rouse; and grandchildren, Rebecca Jenkins Taylor (Bobby) and Eddie Rouse. He loved and adored his great-grandchildren, Bridgette, Nicholas and Bryce Taylor. Raymond is also survived by five sisters, Ruth Little (Harold), Alvira Griffis, Lillian Andrews, Betty Sheldon (Jerry) and Carol White (Wayne); and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Ray Davis is preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Nellie Davis; brother, Richard Davis; and his sister, Ellen Dutton.
Friends are welcome to join the family at a graveside service at Hillcrest Cemetery today at 11 a.m. and a memorial service celebrating Ray’s life today at 7 p.m. at Fleming Baptist Church, 3027 Peach Orchard Road, Augusta, phone (706) 798-3511.
Arrangements are under the direction of Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 2524 Lumpkin Road, Augusta.
