Dr. Frederick H. Steen, of Meadville, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at Meadville Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 102 years old.
Dr. Steen, a son of Herman C.F. and Frieda Breuer Steen, was born Nov. 26, 1907, in Brooklyn, N.Y.
He received the bachelor of arts degree, summa cum laude, from Colgate University, and the Ph.D. from Harvard University. After serving on the faculty of Georgia Tech for eight years, he joined the mathematics department of Allegheny College in 1942, where he was professor of mathematics for 33 years, chairman of the department and secretary of the faculty.
His community activities included serving as the campaign chairman for the United Fund, member of the board of directors of the fund, president of the West Mead School PTA, teacher of the men’s class at Stone Church for 35 years and secretary-treasurer of the Meadville Round Table.
He authored five books and a number of technical papers in mathematics, was governor of the Mathematical Association of America, chairman of its Allegheny Mountain Section and visiting lecturer for the association. He was a member of the honor societies Phi Beta Kappa and Kappa Phi Kappa and, with his wife, served for 20 years as Danforth associate. He was included in Who’s Who in America and was twice cited in the list of Outstanding Educators of America.
Dr. Steen was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Over his lifetime, among a number of hobbies and interests, he enjoyed woodworking; gardening; reading biography, history, theology and mysteries; listening to opera, classical and country-western music; playing his marimba, performing magic and solving crossword puzzles.
Marion Rodger Steen, his wife of 65 years, preceded him in death.
He is survived by their children, Martha Whitney of Palo Alto, Calif., Robert of Pittsboro, N.C., John of Zionsville, Ind., Rodger of Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Paul of Ithaca, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at the Patricia Bush Tippie Alumni Center at Allegheny College on Feb. 6 at 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Frederick and Marion Steen Mathematics Scholarship at Allegheny College, 520 N. Main St., Meadville, Pa. 16335-3902.
