Dr. John J. Euliano Sr.

12/24/05 — ERIE — Dr. John J. Euliano Sr., 90, a longtime Erie surgeon, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, at Hamot Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 24, 1915, in Meadville, the son of the late Alessandro and Josephine Tino Euliano.

Dr. Euliano was a 1936 graduate of Allegheny College and graduated in 1940 from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He then began an internship at Hamot Hospital which was interrupted by the start of World War II. During the war, he served as a captain with the U.S. Army Air Force Medical Corps. Following the war, he returned to Hamot to complete his residency in orthopedic surgery and was elevated to attending orthopedist in 1950. Dr. Euliano was known and respected as an innovator in joint replacement surgery. In 1962, he was appointed chairman of the department of orthopedics at Hamot and served in that capacity for many years. Dr. Euliano also served as chief surgeon of Erie’s Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. His professional memberships include the American Medical Association, Pennsylvania Medical Society and the Erie County Medical Society.

He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Kahkwa Country Club along with the Erie Maennerchor and former Aviation clubs.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Hall and Theresa Anselmo; and a brother, Marshall Euliano.

He is survived by his wife, Clarice Matz Euliano; and his children, Dr. John J. Euliano Jr. and his wife, Karen, of Erie, Ruthanne Marz and her husband, Richard, of Danville, Calif., and Douglas J. Euliano of Erie. He is the brother of Thomas Euliano and his wife, Tillie, of Anaheim Hills, Calif., Marie Kosturick of Conneaut Lake and Madeline Simonetta of Meadville. Dr. Euliano is the grandfather of John J. Euliano III and his wife, Rebekah, Kristen Costa and her husband, Matthew, Jessica Marz, Joshua Marz and his wife, Stephanie, Jonathan Marz and his wife, Ann, and Nicholas Marz; along with a great-grandson, Matthew Costa Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call at John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West Ninth and Liberty Street, Erie, Monday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., and are invited to attend prayer services there Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Jude Catholic Church.

Entombment will be in Gate of Heaven Mausoleum.

Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, 1645 W. Eighth St., Erie, Pa. 16505.
