STONEBORO —
Martha A. Richmond, 80, of Stoneboro (Sandy Lake Township, Mercer County), passed away at 6 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, after a short illness.
Born Nov. 20, 1931, in Erie, she was a daughter of William P. and Pearl A. Struchen Bender. She married George A. Richmond on Feb. 7, 1953; he preceded her in death Jan. 22, 2000.
A 1949 graduate of the former Academy High School of Erie, she also was a 1951 graduate of Thiel College, Greenville, where she earned a degree in secretarial science and where she served as secretary of the Beta Sigma Omicron sorority.
She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Erie.
In her early years Martha worked as a secretary for the General Electric Corp. of Erie and, upon moving to Mercer County, she worked at the Mercer County Schools Office. She retired in 1992 as secretary of the Special Education Department of Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV, Grove City.
She also volunteered her time with Lakeview Area Meals on Wheels and at the Lakeview Community Library. She was a member of the former Sandy Lake Literary Club and member of the AARP.
She is survived by a daughter, Renee A. Batchelor and her husband, Nathan C., of Sandy Lake; two sons, Mark A. Richmond and his wife, Nancy, of Monroeville, and Eric J. Richmond and his wife, Merna, of Virginia Beach, Va.; and three grandchildren, Alexander and Elizabeth Richmond, and Lindsey Batchelor.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Calling hours are Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Scott A. Black Funeral Home, 99 Franklin St., Stoneboro.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. James G. Young, pastor of Methodists United In Faith officiating.
Interment and committal service will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Erie.
