St. Petersburg, Fla. —
Sharon Babcock McKay of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Meadville, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Sharon was born in Hornell, N.Y., on Feb. 17, 1946, to Will and Doris Babcock. She married Wayne McKay on March 28, 1964. He survives.
She graduated from Meadville Area Senior High School in 1964. After her husband’s discharge from the U.S. Air Force in 1967, they moved to Largo, Fla. Sharon worked for Computer People in St. Petersburg, and later earned her licensed practical nursing degree while living in Moultrie, Ga. She enjoyed working in various doctors’ offices and later provided care for the elderly in assisted living facilities in St. Petersburg. Since 1994 she worked for Continental Airlines as a reservation agent and later became a customer service supervisor.
She enjoyed traveling and she and her husband and friends traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, South America and the United States. She especially enjoyed returning to Meadville to visit friends and attending her class reunions.
Surviving are her husband, Wayne, and her daughters, Charlene Koch, Donna Henry and her husband, Gary, her son, Wayne McKay and his wife, Amanda, all residing in St. Petersburg. Sharon and Wayne opened their home to many foreign exchange students and 48 foster children over the course of 20 years, two of whom remain as dear to them as their children, Bobby Ruska and his wife, Jeanene, and Vickie Deavers and her husband, Gary. In addition, her surviving grandchildren are Marissa Koch and Jeremy Koch, both presently attending Florida State University in Tallahassee and the University of Florida in Gainesville, respectively. She will be sadly missed by Kathy Evers and Dee Pfieffer, her two very close friends in St. Petersburg; and her lifelong friend Sandra DuChene and her daughter, Danelle Bennett, both of Meadville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Doris Babcock, both of St. Petersburg; and a brother, Don, of Custer, Mont.
Contributions in Sharon’s name can be made to Suncoast Hospice, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd., St. Petersburg, Fla. 33760, telephone (727) 467-7423.
A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced in The Meadville Tribune. Memories and condolences may be sent to mcwayne@hotmail.com.
