WINTER HAVEN, Fla. —
James Oscar Hall, 89, of Winter Haven, Fla., formerly of Meadville, passed away Sunday, July 15, 2012, at Good Shepherd Hospice House, Auburndale, Fla.
James was born in Meadville on Nov. 26, 1922, a son of the late Earl Dewey and Dorthea Peas Hall. On Dec. 30, 1983, James married Mary Peggy Sweeney; she survives. He had previously married Alice Euliano Hall on April 13, 1946; she preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 1976.
Following his graduation from Meadville High School, James attended Penn State College prior to entering the U.S. Army Air Corps. A veteran of World War II, James served his country honorably from Oct. 15, 1942, until Dec. 6, 1945, where he had attained the rank of first lieutenant and had received the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights against the enemy in the European Theater of Operations. He joined the Air Force Reserves on Oct. 31, 1952, and served until Oct. 12, 1964, at which time he attained the rank of captain. Following his service time, he graduated from Allegheny College with a degree in journalism. He became a journalist for both The Meadville Tribune and the Allegheny Newspaper. Subsequently he became employed by Westinghouse, Meadville, and was later transferred to the Pittsburgh area, where he worked in the Large Rotating Apparatus Department. He traveled nationally and internationally during his career with Westinghouse. Following his 1982 retirement, James settled in the state of Florida and began working part-time for Sears, retiring for the second time at the young age of 86.
In his younger years, James enjoyed refereeing for high school football and basketball throughout the western Pennsylvania area. An avid golfer, James was a member of Churchill Valley Country Club, Pittsburgh, and The Country Club at Meadville where he regularly golfed with his father and his brothers, Richard and William. James continued to enjoy his golf game well into his 80s. James was always a very handy man who enjoyed tinkering and fixing things. He will be remembered as a people person.
In addition to his wife, Mary, of 28 years, James is survived by three children, Dennis Earl Hall and his wife, Holly, of New Palestine, Ind., James Michael Hall and his wife, Carol, of Greencastle, and Cindy Hall Lopez and her husband, Pete, of Ft. Collins, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Peter, Allison, Amie, Kelly, Courtney, Ryan, Macke and Brittany; five great-grandchildren, Grant, Sophia, Zachary, Carly and Alexander; two stepdaughters, Dana Deck and Melahn Deck, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, Alice, of 30 years, James was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Hall and William Hall.
Family and friends are invited to call on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, where a scripture service will be conducted at 7 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, at St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, 1085 Water St., Meadville, with Father Marc Solomon, pastor, as celebrant.
Interment with full military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006, will take place in Greendale Cemetery, West Mead Township.
