George Boyd Jr.

ERIE — George Boyd Jr., 65, of 1207 W. Eighth St., Erie, passed away at home on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

George was born in Coldwater, Miss., on March 19, 1947, a son of Luella Ramsey Pope and the late George Boyd Sr.

George had married Brenda Newsome; she survives.

George was a member of United Faith Fellowship Church of God, Meadville. He also attended Mt. Gerizim Christian Center of Erie.

George was the founder and owner of Boyd Construction Company, having been in business for 40 years. He originally began his employment with Bruno Harris Company in 1975 where he learned the trade of finishing cement, then mastered it. He stayed very busy and was always able to find work. He believed there is no such thing as “nothing to do.”  George was a self-educated man and eventually obtained his GED.

A kind and gentle man, George never turned anyone down when asked to do almost anything; he would and could get the job done. “Call George,” others would say when something needed fixed, built, hauled or paved. George loved to read, sing, attend family functions and he enjoyed teaching his younger brothers “the trade.” He inspired many of his family to work hard. He was funny and loved sharing stories with the family as he always had a story to tell.

In addition to his mother, Luella Pope of Meadville, George is survived by five children, Tina N. Butler of Erie, Joseph Paul Newsome and George E. Newsome both of Meadville, Mckenzie Brown and Marissa Brown, both of Cleveland, Ohio; two stepchildren, Levette Newsome and Lawrence Newsome, both of Meadville; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; 12 brothers and sisters, Eddie B. Mitchell and his wife, Erma, of Coldwater, Miss., Booker T. Pope of Columbus, Ohio, Truman Boyd and his wife, Mattie, of Meadville, Bobbie J. Hillard of Erie, Albert C. Boyd, Bob Boyd, JB Boyd, and Elijah Boyd and his wife, Theresa, all of Meadville, Detroit Boyd, Jim Henry Boyd and Sally Boyd Turner, all of Memphis, Tenn., and Jesse Dumas of St. Louis, Mo., and his companion, Bobbie J. Daniels, of Erie; and a host of nieces and nephews who were also like children.

In addition to his father, George Boyd Sr., George was preceded in death by three children, Camera T. Butler, Sertha Newsome and Courtney Chin; seven brothers and sisters, Hubert Pope, JQ Pope, Mary K. Wilkins, James C. Boyd, Leroy Boyd, Allen Boyd and Denzel Boyd; and a half brother, George Boyd.

Family and friends are invited to call on Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville.

A Homecoming Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at United Faith Fellowship Church, 561 State St., Meadville, with the Rev. Berta Newsome Jones, pastor, officiating.

Interment will take place in Greendale Cemetery, West Mead Township
