SAEGERTOWN —
Paul J. Gilbert Sr., 82, formerly of Cochranton and a resident of Crawford County Care Center, Saegertown, for the past seven years, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at Meadville Medical Center.
Born June 15, 1930, in Erie, he was a son of Frederick Allen and Henrietta Carter Gilbert. He married Gladys Kaster on Oct. 1, 1955, and she survives.
He served with the U.S. Navy on the USS Shenandoah during the Korean War. Returning from the war, he worked at the American Viscose for several years and, later in life, worked for Girardat Transportation and Woodring Security.
He was a life member of the Meadville Veterans of Foreign Wars (Cooties) Post 2006, Cochranton United Methodist Church and a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Meadville Aerie 429.
He enjoyed gardening and was an active participant in the activities at Crawford County Care Center.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 57 years, include two sons, Harvey J. Gilbert and his wife, Star, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Paul J. Gilbert Jr. and his wife Teresa of Mercer; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Castile and her husband, Al, of Blooming Valley.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and Leonard Gilbert; and a sister, Anna Mae Gorby.
Friends will be received at Dickson Family Funeral Home Inc., 123 S. Franklin St., Cochranton, on Thursday from 5 until 8 p.m. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Greg Spencer of Cochranton United Methodist Church officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Meadville VFW Post 2006.
Interment will be in Saegertown Cemetery.
