MEADVILLE —
Lawrence Dwight Shirley, 86, formerly of Cooperstown and a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community for the past year, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at the home. Born, June 17, 1926, in Wayne Township, he was a son of John Ellis and Addie Deeter Shirley. He married Derma Pauline Seely on June 12, 1953, and she survives.
He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Returning from the war, he was a machinist at Joy Manufacturing for 42 years, retiring in 1987.
He was a member of the Mt. Joy Church, enjoyed traveling, attending numerous church camp meetings, and being a grandpa and great grandpa. He was also well-known for his gospel singing and guitar playing.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 59 years, is a son, Larry D. Shirley and his wife, Sonja, of Cooperstown, and a daughter, Renee L. Smith of King, N.C.; four grandchildren, David L. Smith and his wife, Amy, John D. Shirley and his wife, Anna, Rachel Drummond and her husband, David, and Joseph L. Shirley and his fiancée, Angela Dietrich; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ellis J. (Hap) Shirley.
Friends will be received at the Dickson Family Funeral Home Inc., 123 S. Franklin St. on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. An additional calling hour will be on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Mt. Joy Church on Drake Hill Road, Cochranoton. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. at the church on Saturday, with the Rev. Herb Smith from Alliance, Ohio, officiating.
Interment will be in Peters Cemetery, Canal Township.
