Hazel Lemme

MEADVILLE — Hazel Lemme, 96, of 31 N. Park Ave., Meadville, passed away Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at Meadville Medical Center.

Hazel was born in Meadville on Feb. 2, 1916, the daughter of the late Joseph and Antonia (Camerino) Davena.

On April 27, 1938, Hazel married Dominick Lemme; he preceded her in death on Sept. 5, 1970.

She was a member of St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, Meadville, and its Altar Rosary Society.

In 1974, Hazel retired from the former Gelvin, Jackson & Starr Insurance Co. Previously she had been employed by the former Bleutge & Knoblow Insurance Agency, which later merged with the Tom Deloe Insurance Agency. 

A 1933 graduate of Meadville High School, Hazel went on to complete her nursing degree in 1937 and worked at the former City Hospital until 1939.

She was a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Reale Club. She loved to cook but what she loved most was her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and being with her family.

Hazel is survived by a daughter, Mary Grace Coon and her husband, Larry, of Meadville; six grandchildren, Lisa Whitehouse and her husband, Rick, of Highlands Ranch, Colo., James D. Hamilton and his wife, Katherine, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Allison Rowse and her husband, Craig, of Pittsburgh, Karen Coon of Roanoke, Va., Anne Schwab and her husband, Robert, of Meadville, and Sam Coon and his fiancee, Tanya Strait, of Meadville; six great-grandchildren, Alan Schwab, Cody Schwab, Dylan Schwab, Thomas Rowse, Katie Rowse and Ellie Hamilton; a brother, Charles Davena of Waverly, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Lemme of Sonoma, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Linn Hamilton of Cincinnati, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Dominick, of  32 years and her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by a daughter, Louise Ann Hamilton; a son, Charles Davena Lemme; and seven sisters, Mary Grace Davena, Emmalina Davena, Florence Galle, JoAnna (Jennie) Rowles, Louise Longo, Margaret (Maggie) McBride and Rose Davena.

Family and friends are invited to call today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, where a scripture service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, 1085 Water St., Meadville, with Father Marc Solomon, pastor, as celebrant.

Interment will take place in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105; or St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, 1085 Water St., Meadville.
