Ramsey Hudson Frist, Ph.D.

PITTSBURGH — Ramsey Hudson Frist, Ph.D., 76, of Pittsburgh, died Tuesday, Dec. 4 after a lengthy illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Blanche Ramsey Frist; a sister, Michael Maria Shell; a half sister, Ida Grace Herchberger; and a grandson, Patrick J. Derry.

Ramsey, who grew up at Conneaut Lake, earned a bachelor of science degree in physics from Allegheny College and a master of science and Ph.D. degree in biophysics from the University of Pittsburgh. He was awarded postdoctoral fellowships at the Virus Research Unit, Cambridge, England, and at the University of Wisconsin, respectively. Ramsey held a faculty position for 33 years with the Department of Biology at West Virginia University where he served as associate professor and associate chair, retiring in 2002.

In his youth he was active in scouting. He joined Alpha Chi Rho while at Allegheny College. He participated in the early formation of the Monongalia County EMS. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his life partner, Lynne, his children and grandchildren — always teaching them to be curious, explore and respect nature and the environment. Ramsey was beloved and will be missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving partner, Lynne Porterfield of Pittsburgh; two daughters, Heidi Frist and Erica Cannfield (James); a son, Jonathan (Jane) Frist; and seven grandchildren, William and Thomas Derry, Ian and Jillian Frist, Alex, Ava and Colin Cannfield; and a sister, Lorraine Fought of Georgetown, Texas; a brother-in-law, Elwood (Curly) Schell of Conneaut Lake; and former wife, Judith Riutort (Al) of Newport News, Va.

A memorial service will be held at Unitarian Fellowship, 429 Warrick St., Morgantown, on Saturday at 1 p.m. A reception will follow at 2 p.m. at the Montmartre in Hotel Morgan, 126 High St., Morgantown.

The family suggests donations to The Nature Conservancy, Attn.: Treasury (web/memorial giving), 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, Va. 22203.

Arrangements are being handled by John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. 4900 Centre Ave. at Devonshire Street, Pittsburgh (freyvogelfuneralhome.com).
