August 2, 2011 7:00 a.m. EMPORIUM, Cameron County —
The Crawford County METS baseball team had all the makings of a long summer journey. But on Monday, the crew forgot to bring along the clutch, leading to a 4-2 loss to Greater Wyoming Area during the semifinals of the Senior League All-Star State Championship Tournament.
“We had some huge hopes for this year,” said a dejected METS coach Steve Sada. “But sometimes things don’t work out like you want them to.”
The Mid-East/Titusville/Saegertown squad out-hit Greater Wyoming 11-5. Yet only a couple of those hits came when it mattered most. The Mets instead stranded 12 runners, including the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.
“We left a lot of runners on base,” said Sada. “We should have broken that game open early on. We just couldn’t get any clutch hits. And we hit balls right at them at them in some key moments.
“It was one of those games,” he added.
METS was ahead 2-1 when a couple defensive letdowns let Greater Wyoming retake control late in the game.
In the sixth, pinch runner Dylan Pegg scored on a METS throwing error. And the runner that reached on that error later scored the go-ahead on a fielder’s choice that was thrown back to home, but lost in the commotion at the plate.
Then in the seventh, Wyoming’s Tyler Wrubel reached on an error and later scored the insurance run on a sacrifice fly.
“You have games like this now and then,” said Sada. “It’s just too bad that it was now. There were a few guys on base that we should have thrown out. It was those little things that mean a win or a loss in a close ball game that we didn’t do.”
Wyoming’s Jake Granteed got the win on the mound. Through the final three innings he allowed one unearned run on three hits while striking out four. He relieved starter Eric Walkowiak, who yielded eight hits and one unearned run over the first four innings.
“Our pitching stepped up,” said Greater Wyoming coach Dean Carey. “But I think it was defense that won the game. I think we can play defense with anybody. That’s always been our strong point.”
Leading Wyoming on offense was second baseman Mike Carey, who was 2-for-3. His pinch runner, Dylan Pegg, scored two runs. Catcher Trent Grove added an RBI single in the third inning that gave GWA a temporary 1-0 lead.
For the locals, Luke Carter was saddled with the loss on the mound. Through one and two-thirds innings he allowed only one base hit, but had two unearned runs on his account, including the go-ahead in the sixth.
Zach Foltz had a nice start for METS, pitching five and a third innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with two strikeouts.
“(Foltz) did an excellent job,” said Sada. “We wanted three or four innings out of him, but he pitched five nice innings. We couldn’t have asked for any more from him.”
At the plate for Crawford County, Carter was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Austin Scere also hit a double. And Steven Sada had a game-tying RBI single in the fourth.
Crawford County METS ends the season as District 1 champ and Section 1 champ. They were also 3-0 through pool play at the state tournament, making yesterday’s game the team’s first loss after starting out the all-star season 8-0.
“That was a great team we played,” said coach Carey.

DISTRICT 10 BASEBALL: Big Reds shut down Lions
SLIPPERY ROCK — The Linesville baseball team, with its mix of experienced and lesser-experienced players, has been capable of two different kinds of games this season.
The first is the sharp, skillful kind of effort the Lions put together Monday in their 10-7 win over Cochranton in the District 10 Class A quarterfinals. -
DISTRICT 10 BASEBALL: Mercyhurst outslugs Lake in D-10 semis
ERIE — After a District 10 Class A championship game appearance last year, the Conneaut Lake baseball team lost four seniors who were important to the team’s success.
Even though the talented quartet graduated and Lake featured just three seniors this year, the team came together and reached the district semifinals. The team’s end result, and the school’s last game as a baseball team due to Conneaut Lake, Conneaut Valley, and Linesville consolidating into Conneaut Area Senior High, was a 15-4 loss in six innings to Mercyhurst Prep on Friday at Ainsworth Field in Erie. -
DISTRICT 10 BASEBALL: Panthers edge Tigers, reach D-10 title game
ERIE — The Saegertown baseball team made an art form of compiling mercy rule wins this season. Nearly all of the Panthers’ 20 regular season victories were by 10 runs or more, as double-digit hits and runs scored were the norm.
The playoffs have been a different beast for the defending District 10 Class AA champion Cats, but they continue to find ways to win. -

The very first word spoken by Cochranton boys volleyball coach Brad Custead in his post-match interview will sum up Friday night’s District 10 championship finale better than all the words that follow it.

DISTRICT 10 BASEBALL: Lions top Cards
ERIE — If this story had to describe every clutch hit, gutsy pitch, run-saving defensive play, or momentum-shifting moment during Monday’s playoff classic between Region 3 foes Cochranton and Linesville; there wouldn’t be room for much else in today’s newspaper.
The bottom line is: You should have been there. -
