MEN'S BASKETBALL: Solid first half effort not enough for Gators

MEADVILLE — It was a tale of two halves for the Allegheny men’s basketball team on Wednesday night against No. 9 Wooster in North Coast Athletic Conference action at the David V. Wise Center.

The Gators (9-15, 3-12 NCAC) were right there with the Fighting Scots (21-3, 14-1) in the first half, shooting 58.6 percent to Wooster’s 56.7 and found themselves only down 44-41 after the first 20 minutes.

Things started to get ugly quick for Allegheny in the second half as they were outscored 42-23 on its way to a 86-64 defeat to the hands of Wooster.

“In the first half we were working our offense pretty well and getting open shots and making them,” Ryan Stanko said. “In the second half they made some adjustments. We still had some open shots but they didn’t fall.”

Stanko in particular was finding his groove in the first half, scoring 19 points in 14 minutes.

Stanko only scored two points in the second half to finish with 21 for the game.

The Fighting Scots started the second half on a 10-3 run to build their first double digit lead of the game at 54-44. Xavier Brown connected on a 3-pointer to give Wooster the 10 point lead.

“It seemed like it,” Wooster head coach Steve Moore said about his team playing more comfortable with a double digit lead. “I don’t know if it was a confidence factor but they seemed to settle down and play some good basketball in the second half.”

As the deficit continued to grow, Allegheny was forced to settle for 3-pointers and long range shots to try and crawl back in it but were unsuccessful.

Evan Pannell put the exclamation point on the win for the Fighting Scots with his two-handed slam with a couple minutes remaining in the game.

McLeod finished in double figured for the Gators with 13 points.

For Wooster. Josh Claytor and Brown led the way with 16 points apiece.
