District 10’s top official has knocked down a report by the Erie Times-News that the classification of the Conneaut Area Senior High School’s football team has changed.
On Wednesday afternoon, a report on the Times-News’ Varsity blog at goerie.com attributed District 10 when it stated that Conneaut’s football team dropped from Class AAA to double-A after a PIAA adjustment. Wally Blucas, chairman of the District 10 committee, dispelled the blog’s report on Wednesday night.
District 10’s deadline for schools to submit enrollment numbers for the 2012-13 cycle was Oct. 15, 2011. At the time, the Linesville football team was a co-op between Linesville and Conneaut Lake, while Conneaut Valley was its own team.
Conneaut School Board voted to consolidate Conneaut Lake, Conneaut Valley and Linesville on April 30, 2012. District 10 then ruled that based on the enrollment of the three schools, Conneaut would be designated a triple-A classification playing in Region 1, which includes all single-A schools.
Even though Conneaut’s updated numbers would have allowed it to be a Class AA school in football, District 10 cannot make any changes until the next two-year cycle begins in 2014.
“We added the numbers up from the previous year and those were the numbers that were submitted,” Blucas said. “Then, a new application was submitted when the three were combined.”
Conneaut still cannot win the Region 1 championship, which guarantees a berth into the District 10 Class A tournament. The Eagles can, however, enter the Class AAA playoffs as an at-large team.
“We have provisions in our handbook for all situations to be covered,” Blucas said, “but we determined they were not eligible for a region championship. But they can still be an at-large playoff team in triple-A.”
The report also indicated that Conneaut’s softball team dropped from Class AAA to double-A, but that is incorrect, Blucas said.
In other Eagles news, Conneaut athletic director Brandon Crum confirmed that Stephanie Baer is the new CASH head softball coach.
Baer, a Cambridge Springs graduate, is a three-time Meadville Tribune softball Player of the Year in 2005, ’07 and ’08. She also played a season for the Allegheny College softball team.
