June 27, 2009 — Two Wrights don’t make a wrong.
That’s the current motto of the Country Meadows Crawford Cup team as it sits in first place headed into today’s second round of golf at Whispering Pines.
Randy and Bob Wright, along with Todd Woods, carded 14 team points in the opener at the Meadville Country Club on May 31.
Randy Wright was the medalist with a 76, followed by Woods with a 78 to win Flight C. Bob Wright shot an 85 for fifth place in Flight B.
“I was fortunate enough to play in a scramble ther eon Wednesday, so I was able to see the course and get on the greens. They are right about perfect, and personally I like faster greens. They always keep them in real good condition.”
“I think the golf course is in about as good of shape as I’ve ever seen it right now.”
last round — “I guess, all in all, it was a good day. It was good in the conditions, because I hit the ball really high. The wind can play a lot of havoc on my approach shot.”

looking forward to hopefully playing a good round
“We’ve got a pretty solid team with the two Wrights and myself, and we’ve got a couple other guys waiting in the wings,” Woods said. “We’ve been fortunate to hit it well so far.”
The trio has been playing leagues together for quite some time, and Woods feels like its a solid team. And a lot of his faith in the combination comes from the Wrights.
“They are both good players — long hitters,” Woods said.
Woods also has a familiarity with the Pines, having been a member there before Country Meadows.
“I used to belong at the Pines, so I know it well,” he said. “It’s very tricky in the first four holes.”
The course is in excellent shape, according to host Carol Kingzett, so the competition should be quite a bit better than the opening round in the wind and cold.
Temperatures should be around 74 degrees with a light wind and no precipitation at the 2 p.m. tee-time.
“Everybody kind of struggled at the club because the conditions weren’t great,” Woods said. “There was a 30-mile-an-hour wind and it was chilly. We played pretty solid that day. We’ve got a lot of golf to play this year before we are on top again, though.”
Woods is looking for Oakland Beach and the Country Club to make a move.
The Beach is currently in second place with 11 1/2 points, led by a B Flight-winning 80 from Jim Dupont Sr.
MCC is in third place with 9 1/2 points and is paced by Jeff Byham’s B Flight second-place showing with an 81.
“Oakland and the Country Club, depending on who they send, are always tough,” Woods said.
Country Meadows was also the 2008 champion, somewhat of a surprise considering it was the first year the course had competed in the event.
Last season Mt. Hope built on its already-existing lead at the Pines in Round 2 under similar course conditions.
Sixth-place Whispering Pines would love to make a jump like it did on its home course in 2008. The Pines team slapped 14 1/2 points on the board last year to move up into third place.
The next round will be Sunday, July 12 men at Island Green Golf Course at 1 p.m.

DISTRICT 10 BASEBALL: Big Reds shut down Lions
SLIPPERY ROCK — The Linesville baseball team, with its mix of experienced and lesser-experienced players, has been capable of two different kinds of games this season.
The first is the sharp, skillful kind of effort the Lions put together Monday in their 10-7 win over Cochranton in the District 10 Class A quarterfinals. -
DISTRICT 10 BASEBALL: Mercyhurst outslugs Lake in D-10 semis
ERIE — After a District 10 Class A championship game appearance last year, the Conneaut Lake baseball team lost four seniors who were important to the team’s success.
Even though the talented quartet graduated and Lake featured just three seniors this year, the team came together and reached the district semifinals. The team’s end result, and the school’s last game as a baseball team due to Conneaut Lake, Conneaut Valley, and Linesville consolidating into Conneaut Area Senior High, was a 15-4 loss in six innings to Mercyhurst Prep on Friday at Ainsworth Field in Erie. -
DISTRICT 10 BASEBALL: Panthers edge Tigers, reach D-10 title game
ERIE — The Saegertown baseball team made an art form of compiling mercy rule wins this season. Nearly all of the Panthers’ 20 regular season victories were by 10 runs or more, as double-digit hits and runs scored were the norm.
The playoffs have been a different beast for the defending District 10 Class AA champion Cats, but they continue to find ways to win. -
BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals come back from losers’ bracket to win D-10 title
The very first word spoken by Cochranton boys volleyball coach Brad Custead in his post-match interview will sum up Friday night’s District 10 championship finale better than all the words that follow it.
“Incredible,” he said. -

D-10 SOFTBALL: Tigers no-hit in loss to Braves
HARBORCREEK TOWNSHIP — The Maplewood softball team had no answer for Iroquois starting pitcher Megan Martin on Tuesday during the District 10 Class AA quarterfinals on the campus of Penn State Behrend in Erie.
Martin worked around two errors during a no-hitter that included zero walks. And the Braves’ offense was sure to back her up during Iroquois’ 10-0 victory in five innings. -
D-10 BASEBALL: Prep rolls past ’Dogs in four innings
ERIE — Hitting, they say, is contagious. And the Cathedral Prep baseball team had a full-blown outbreak against Meadville on Tuesday at Ainsworth Field, notching 13 base hits in a 16-1, four-inning rout of the Bulldogs during opening round action of the District 10 Class AAA playoffs.

DISTRICT 10 BASEBALL: Lions top Cards
ERIE — If this story had to describe every clutch hit, gutsy pitch, run-saving defensive play, or momentum-shifting moment during Monday’s playoff classic between Region 3 foes Cochranton and Linesville; there wouldn’t be room for much else in today’s newspaper.
The bottom line is: You should have been there. -
BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Bulldogs stop Trojans to cap perfect region slate
Meadville junior Matt Izbinski laced a hard spike down the line, and so ended the regular season for the Bulldogs boys volleyball team — with a 3-1 win over McDowell, and a 9-0 run through Region 1. It all summed up on Friday night at the House of Thrills.
