June 27, 2009 — The Crawford Cup is on the move today, and it’s a consensus that the summer weather is welcome.

Teams will tee off at 2 p.m. at Whispering Pines for the second of five rounds in the annual event.

Meadville Country Club is in the lead on the women’s side after winning the opening round on its home course with 18 points. Mt. Hope holds the No. 2 position at 13 1/2 points.

The Country Club also won the 2008 event and is looking to become the first team to win back-to-back cups since Oakland Beach in 2004-05.

It was a cold, windy day May 31 for the opener, but MCC’s Patty Lang was able to nab medalist honors with an 82 in the A Flight.

MCC also earned top honors in the B and C flights for the clean sweep, but Lang knows today’s round will be a little more evenly spread.

“I was just a survivor like everyone else,” said Lang of the opener. “I think everyone struggled that day.

“The Pines plays a bit shorter, so it makes a much more equal playing field. But you never know.”

Kathy Moss won the B Flight with a 98, and Nancy Bohman’s 92 was tops in the C Flight.

Second-seed Linda Cervone is back from vacation for MCC and will be playing today.

“She’s awesome,” Bohman said. “She has a wonderful game. I am sure she will do just fine (today). She’s a competitor.”

Bohman plays Whispering Pines on Thursday nights in a league, and she knows that the course’s length can be deceiving.

“Although it’s a short course, it’s a tough course,” she said. “It will be fun. There’s lots of friendly competition.”

Host Carol Kingzett said Thursday evening’s rain did not leave a dent and everything will be ready to go today.

“The greens absorbed all the water just fine,” she said. “Obviously there is some small wet spots, but they should not come into play. The course is in good shape right now.”

The next event is scheduled for Saturday, July 11 at Island Green Golf Course at 1 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Indians notch win despite shooting, rebounding woes

D-10 CLASS AA DUALS: Bison win title, snap Reynolds’ streak of seven straight
EDINBORO — As if it was destiny, wrestling powerhouses Fort LeBoeuf and Reynolds met in the District 10 Class AA Team Dual final on Saturday at Edinboro University’s McComb Fieldhouse.
After Fort LeBoeuf earned a paper-thin 28-27 win over Reynolds on Jan. 21 that came down to the tiebreaker, the Bison once again came out on top. The Bison made up for last year’s loss to the Raiders in the final by earning a 31-28 victory on Saturday.
