March 6, 2011 7:00 a.m. SHARON —
One of these things is not like the other. And it’s a darn good thing, too.
Cambridge Springs junior Shawn Reynolds became the first PIAA qualifier from his school since 1999 with a third-place finish at the Class AA regional tournament in Sharon.
Of a group of seven local qualifiers for the Class AA state tournament, Reynolds was the only one not make the trip last season.
Local repeat qualifiers are Union City’s Shane Rankin (3rd, 112) and Greg Reinke (3rd, 215), Saegertown’s Sean Byham (2nd, 135), Cochranton’s Matthew Bryer (3rd, 130) and Jamestown champions Tyler Roberts (112) and Aaron Roberts (119).
Prior to Reynolds, the Spa’s entries to the PIAA tourney were Ryan Sayers and Justin DeArment.
Reynolds lost to returning PIAA champion Stephen Ceremuga in the quarterfinals Friday evening. He quickly pinned Isaac Seniour of Cranberry in the first-round consolations.
Saturday morning, Reynolds began a long, uphill battle to move on with 3-2, 4-3 and 6-4 decision wins.
The 4-3 decision came against Cochranton sophomore Cameron Cyphert, and Reynolds punched his ticket with a 6-4 victory over Conneaut Lake senior Tylor Williams. The Blue Devils junior already had plenty of experience with the last two.
“Cam Cyphert and I used to wrestle all the time,” he said. “Tylor Williams was my first loss in the finals in second grade. I knew he worked on the edge a lot, so I knew when to counter so that helped.”
Williams took an early 2-0 lead with a merkel out of a single-leg dump attempt by Reynolds. But Reynolds hit a roll for a reversal with three back points for a 5-2 lead.
In the second period, Williams chose down and got a quick reversal to make it 5-4. Reynolds went down in the third and escaped shortly after taking injury time at the 1:22 mark.
“It hurt real bad when I took sixth place down here last year,” Reynolds said. “So I worked hard all offseason to get back and make it to states this year. Now I want to bring back a state medal.”
The Bears placed fifth as a team with 56 points. Rankin and Reinke each fell in the semis but battled back for third.
Rankin’s last win of the tourney was his 155th in a four-year career, putting him just two shy of tying the school’s all-time mark set by Jared Burger last season.
Rankin pinned Brandon Puckly of Fort LeBoeuf in the consolation final to put the exclamation point on his weekend after sustaining a minor injury in the quarterfinals.
“I taped it up for my match in the semis and the kid went after it,” said Rankin of his sprained elbow. “I decided not to tape it in the match for third place. It wasn’t bothering me, but it worried me a little bit. The trainers told me I should be good by states.
“I would have been mad if I was a three-time state qualifier and didn’t qualify my senior year. I’m excited.”
Reinke was an 8-5 decision victor against Nick Weaver from Greenville in the third-place consy.
“It feels awesome,” Reinke said. “I think I wrestled really well in my last match. I wrestled (Weaver) earlier and he pinned me. Then I wrestled him for third and fourth at districts and won in overtime.
“I was a little nervous. I’m not gonna lie. I just had to be aggressive. I kept backing him up and I made the pace and it was a good match.”
This season is a little different for Reinke, as he dropped down a weight class to make room for Jeff Burger at heavyweight.
“I think 215 is a little harder than heavyweight, but I am excited to go to states a second time and I want to medal this time,” Reinke said.
The Roberts brothers were dominant through their brackets, both icing the day with technical falls in the championship round.
Tyler took a 16-1 final in four minutes, 37 seconds over Nate Schwab from Smethport. Aaron was a 22-6 victor in 3:29.
For senior Tyler this is the third straight trip. Aaron is making his second in a row as a junior.
“It’s three trips in a row, so hopefully I can get a medal,” Tyler said. “My sophomore year I was one takedown away from a medal. Last year I was one win away. Hopefully I can get over that hump.”
“This is especially sweet because it’s my 100th win,” Aaron said. “I beat a kid that beat me earlier in the year, and I made it to Hershey, so it’s pretty sweet.”
Aaron beat Karl Lightner 26-10 in the semis to lock up the state berth after losing a 6-3 decision to him at the Hickory Invitational Tournament at the opening of the season.
Now the two will have each other to drill with all week and weekend in Hershey.
“We work hard together in the practice room,” Aaron said. “I am glad we get to go together again.”
Returning PIAA eighth-place winner Bryer eased his way to a 9-2 win over Conneaut Lake’s Taylor Ellis in the consolation final.
In the consy semis, the Cardinals junior needed an extremely late takedown to get a 3-2 decision over Jake Keller of Curwensville to stay alive.
“I thought I scored, but I was still worried,” said Bryer of the consy semi match. “I knew if I lost it was over; if I won I kept going.
“It feels great,” Bryer added of qualifying for states for the second straight season. “It was nerve-racking. I just wish (Cam Cyphert) would have been able to pull it off. He already beat the two guys who (wrestled) in the match for third and fourth. But he just didn’t pull it out I guess.”
Byham moved on to states with a 3-2 win over LeBoeuf’s Riley Smith in the semifinals. The difference was a late takedown in the first period.
Reynolds took the team title with 113.5 points, followed by LeBoeuf (103.5), Greenville (66.0) and Seneca (52.0).

DISTRICT 10 BASEBALL: Big Reds shut down Lions
SLIPPERY ROCK — The Linesville baseball team, with its mix of experienced and lesser-experienced players, has been capable of two different kinds of games this season.
The first is the sharp, skillful kind of effort the Lions put together Monday in their 10-7 win over Cochranton in the District 10 Class A quarterfinals. -
DISTRICT 10 BASEBALL: Mercyhurst outslugs Lake in D-10 semis
ERIE — After a District 10 Class A championship game appearance last year, the Conneaut Lake baseball team lost four seniors who were important to the team’s success.
Even though the talented quartet graduated and Lake featured just three seniors this year, the team came together and reached the district semifinals. The team’s end result, and the school’s last game as a baseball team due to Conneaut Lake, Conneaut Valley, and Linesville consolidating into Conneaut Area Senior High, was a 15-4 loss in six innings to Mercyhurst Prep on Friday at Ainsworth Field in Erie. -
DISTRICT 10 BASEBALL: Panthers edge Tigers, reach D-10 title game
ERIE — The Saegertown baseball team made an art form of compiling mercy rule wins this season. Nearly all of the Panthers’ 20 regular season victories were by 10 runs or more, as double-digit hits and runs scored were the norm.

The very first word spoken by Cochranton boys volleyball coach Brad Custead in his post-match interview will sum up Friday night’s District 10 championship finale better than all the words that follow it.

HARBORCREEK TOWNSHIP — The Maplewood softball team had no answer for Iroquois starting pitcher Megan Martin on Tuesday during the District 10 Class AA quarterfinals on the campus of Penn State Behrend in Erie.

D-10 BASEBALL: Prep rolls past ’Dogs in four innings
ERIE — Hitting, they say, is contagious. And the Cathedral Prep baseball team had a full-blown outbreak against Meadville on Tuesday at Ainsworth Field, notching 13 base hits in a 16-1, four-inning rout of the Bulldogs during opening round action of the District 10 Class AAA playoffs.

DISTRICT 10 BASEBALL: Lions top Cards
ERIE — If this story had to describe every clutch hit, gutsy pitch, run-saving defensive play, or momentum-shifting moment during Monday’s playoff classic between Region 3 foes Cochranton and Linesville; there wouldn’t be room for much else in today’s newspaper.
The bottom line is: You should have been there. -
BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Bulldogs stop Trojans to cap perfect region slate
Meadville junior Matt Izbinski laced a hard spike down the line, and so ended the regular season for the Bulldogs boys volleyball team — with a 3-1 win over McDowell, and a 9-0 run through Region 1. It all summed up on Friday night at the House of Thrills.
