Kellilynn Dickson doubled and scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the ninth inning Monday as Mid-East/Cochranton/Saegertown beat Bristol Boro, 3-2, and advanced to the championship final of the Pennsylvania Senior League Championship.
The game was a continuation of Sunday’s winner’s bracket final that was delayed by rain when it was tied 1-1 in the fifth inning.
Both teams scored runs in the sixth inning Monday.
Bristol took a 2-1 lead when Brooke Dugan, who was 3-for-4, reached second on a dropped flyball and Miranda Colon brought her home with a single. After two groundouts, MECS pitcher Sarah Jacobs struck out Bristol shortstop Alexa Adams to strand Colon at third base.
MECS answered in the bottom half of the inning. Jacobs hit a one-out triple and scored on a wild pitch two batters later to tie the score 2-2.
After a three-batter seventh inning, Bristol threatened again in the eighth. Dugan hit a one-out double, but Jacobs coaxed a groundout and a flyout to end the inning. MECS’ Gretchen Herzberger pitched the ninth inning. She gave up a two-out walk, but Bristol could not bring the run home.
Dickson doubled off the outfield wall to lead off the inning. Emily Merritt put down a perfect bunt, advancing Dickson to third. Merritt went to second when when the base was left uncovered.
MECS’ Shelby Proctor worked the count full. Ball four was a wild pitch and Dickson dashed home with the winning run.
MECS plays Bristol at 4 p.m. today in the championship final. The if-necessary game will follow. The winner advances to the East Region Tournament held in Worcester, Mass. The tournament starts Friday and runs through Aug. 5.
Taylor Smith started the game Sunday for MECS and allowed one run on two hits in four innings. Jacobs allowed one unearned run on two hits and struck out four in four innings. Herzberger earned the win with a scoreless ninth.
Sadie Brunot scored on an error in the bottom of the first to give MECS a 1-0 lead.
Ashley Cantiello hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1.
