Tent may fill collapsed dairy barn void at fair

MEADVILLE — A 100-by-300-foot portable tent may be used to house dairy cattle at the 2010 Crawford County Fair because of the collapse of the main dairy barn in January.

The Crawford County Fair Board on Thursday voted to pursue using such a tent from Brandywine Tent Rental Inc. of Upper Marlboro, Md., at an estimated cost of more than $16,000, if the tent is available. Cost estimates were $13,500 for the tent plus another $2,849 in transportation costs.

On Jan. 6 of this year, a 120-by-320-foot steel hoop-frame and fabric-covered structure installed on the fairgrounds in 2008 collapsed under the weight of heavy snow. The $465,000 building is owned by the county and was built as a show arena mainly for dairy exhibitions. It could hold up to 320 cows.

“I’m afraid if we don’t get something and lock it in, we’re not going to have it,” said Morris Waid, fair board president and a Crawford County commissioner.

The county does have insurance on the barn and its replacement and loss of business, but there is a $25,000 deductible, Waid said.

The company that built the dairy barn building, Cover-All Building Systems Inc. of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, filed for bankruptcy protection in Canada in March.

In an interview with the Tribune on Jan. 9, Nathan Stobbe, president of Cover-All, confirmed the building would be replaced at no cost to the county in time for this year’s county fair which is scheduled Aug. 21 through 28.

The county was ready to have Cover-All put a replacement structure on the site when it found out about Cover-All’s financial restructuring in late March.

“It doesn’t look likely we’ll be able to go back on Cover-All (and recoup losses) because of their bankruptcy,” Waid said.

Ted Watts, the county’s attorney, has been researching the matter and “it doesn’t look real promising,” Waid said.

Repeated attempts by the county to contact Cover-All since its bankruptcy filing have been unsuccessful, Waid said.

Tribune attempts to contact Cover-All also have been unsuccessful.
